Position Purpose:

The Lead Organizer's core role is to provide leadership, direction and development to staff and members to carry out the vision, goals and campaigns of the union. The Lead Organizer position is the first level of staff supervision for the organizer job family. Organizers develop and empower workers across the long term-care sector to:
  • Form and grow their union to build power
  • Participate in contract bargaining and enforcement and in political action and advocacy
SEIU Local 2015 organizers may be assigned to work with and on behalf of workers who are already in our local or who are in the process of building a union for the first time

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead teams of staff and members in developing, implementing, and evaluating organizing campaigns, such as contract negotiations, elections, strikes and organizing drives
  • Independently manage assigned turf and that of their team, including: drive outcomes on union recognition, membership and CAF (Caregiver Action Fund) goals; leader and activist recruitment and development; conduct member trainings and meetings; build and grow worker organization (organizing committees, contract action teams, and other teams of workers); developing and executing strategic campaign plans based on goals and objectives.
  • Manage organizers, including hiring and onboarding; supervising, training and coaching staff; creating and executing staff development plans to build skills and competencies; supporting workplans; and holding staff accountable to outcomes, up to and including disciplinary measures as needed
  • Support the execution of key pieces of statewide campaigns or programs and work collaboratively with other departments; contribute to organizational vision and department's strategic plans

Required Qualifications :
  • 3+ years of experience in union or community organizing or representation
  • 6+ months of leading and developing staff
  • Ability to lead with vision and purpose to inspire staff and members to engage in key union priorities and achieve desired outcomes, in politics, growth, leader development and membership
  • Cultural competence to work with diverse staff and communities, with a commitment to building an anti-racist organization
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, execute and evaluate strategic campaign plans and work plans, using sound independent judgment and adapting to changing environments
  • Highly effective oral, written and digital communication skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate data and use data to guide decisions
  • Computer and digital literacy
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Fluency in a second language (highly desirable)
  • Familiarity with the long-term care industry
  • Knowledge of private-sector labor law
  • Experience leading bargaining, contract campaigns and/or growth campaigns

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
Lead Organizers will report to their assigned Coordinator, Deputy Director or Director.
