About this Position The Commerce Director's Office provides centralized finance, budget, legal, IT and HR services and resources for the Department Divisions and attached boards.
This position is a Paralegal for the Director's Office within the Department of Commerce. The position performs various functions in support of the Director, Deputy Director, and Chief Legal Counsel's programs, goals, and objectives. The incumbent performs various duties to facilitate efficient Department and Director's Office communication. Under the supervision and direction of the Chief Legal Counsel, the incumbent performs paralegal and administrative support to the professional staff of the Director's Office including duties involving the Montana Legislature, community development, business development, tourism and film promotion, public housing, public bond issues, works with administratively attached boards and commissions, contract management, research and analysis of legal information such as statutes, court decisions, codes, administrative rules, regulations, etc. The incumbent may also perform contract drafting, execution, compliance, enforcement, amendment, and monitoring duties for the Director's Office. The incumbent also performs various other duties as assigned.
This position is open until filled with a first review date of 8/5/2024. What are we looking for? Education and Experience: •Bachelor's Degree
•2+ years of experience as a paralegal
•It would pique our interest if you had paralegal experience in State Government
Competencies: •Thorough knowledge or legal research, investigative techniques and legal concepts of state law.
•Knowledge and understanding of policies, administrative regulations, case law and ethical standards.
•Knowledge and understanding of litigation processes and case procedures.
•Knowledge and understanding of Rules of Civil Procedures, Montana District Court Rules which govern litigation, Rules of Evidence, principles and sequencing of pleadings and submission procedures for motions and exhibits.
•Knowledge of the Montana Administrative Procedure Act and the process by which administrative agencies adopt administrative rules in Montana.
•Basic knowledge of contract law, standard contract provisions and state contract requirements.
•Effective legal writing using correct legal citations and terminology, vocabulary, grammar and spelling.
•Knowledge of the legislative process and bill drafting techniques.
The successful applicant also will possess the ability to: •Identify and assess complex legal issues and weigh their potential impacts;
•Maintain client confidences on sensitive issues;
•Follow instructions of the Department's attorneys effectively;
•Consistently act in an ethical and professional manner;
•Work collaboratively and respectfully with other legal staff members;
•Remain calm and articulate under pressure; and
•Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with a large staff of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

This position allows for a hybrid work schedule from a remote location within the State of Montana. Weekly travel to Helena offices will be required.
